Churros caseros

45 minutes · 6 servings · vegetarian

Churros are a beloved Mexican bakery and street snack; this is a classic homemade version.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon sugar

Let’s make it

  1. Bring the water, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Stir in the flour all at once and cook 1 minute, then cool 5 minutes.
  3. Beat in the eggs until the dough is smooth and pipeable.
  4. Heat the oil to 350 F / 175 C and fry the churros in batches until golden, 2–3 minutes per batch; drain well.
  5. Roll in cinnamon sugar and serve warm.

Let children shake the warm churros in the cinnamon sugar instead of handling the hot oil.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
