50 minutes · 4 servings · omnivore

A classic savory sticky rice breakfast made with familiar cooked toppings.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 2 cups glutinous rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 oz (170 g) Vietnamese pork sausage or ham, sliced
  • 4 fried egg
  • 2 tbsp fried shallots
  • 2 tbsp scallions
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

Let’s make it

  1. Soak the rice for 20 minutes, drain, then steam it with salt and water until tender, about 25 minutes.
  2. Warm the sausage or ham and cook the eggs fully if making them fresh.
  3. Pack sticky rice into bowls and top with sausage, egg, fried shallots, and scallions.
  4. Drizzle with soy sauce and serve warm.

A little goes a long way; serve small portions with toppings arranged separately.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
