Cheese and Onion Pie
60 minutes · 4 servings · vegetarian
A classic British savoury pie, simplified for a home kitchen.
Ingredients
Check you have the quantities below.
- 500 g shortcrust pastry
- 3 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 200 g cheddar, grated
- 25 g butter
- 1 tbsp plain flour
- 250 ml milk
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten
Let’s make it
- Preheat the oven to 200 C/400 F. Cook the onions in butter over low heat for 15 minutes until soft and golden.
- Stir in the flour, then whisk in the milk and cook until thick. Mix in the cheese, mustard, salt and pepper.
- Line a pie dish with half the pastry. Add the filling, then cover with the remaining pastry and crimp the edges. Brush with beaten egg.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until deep golden and piping hot.
- Rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Let the pie cool a little before serving so the filling holds together better.
Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
