Kue Putu

40 minutes · 4 servings · vegetarian

A steamed palm-sugar rice cake traditionally sold by street vendors, often with a sweet coconut aroma.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup palm sugar, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup grated coconut, steamed
  • as needed banana leaves or putu molds

Let’s make it

  1. Moisten the rice flour lightly with water and salt until it holds together when pressed.
  2. Fill small molds or bamboo putu tubes with rice flour, add a spoonful of palm sugar in the center, and top with more flour.
  3. Steam for 8 to 10 minutes until set and fragrant.
  4. Unmold and serve topped with steamed grated coconut.

Let the cakes cool briefly because the melted sugar inside can be hot.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
