Malaysian · PANTRYHOP RECIPE

Ondeh-Ondeh

40 minutes · 4 servings · vegetarian

A beloved Malaysian sweet snack made with an easy boiled dough.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 250 g glutinous rice flour
  • 180 ml pandan juice or water
  • 1/4 tsp pinch of salt
  • 120 g palm sugar, finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 cups water for boiling

Let’s make it

  1. Mix grated coconut with 1/4 tsp salt and steam 5 minutes or microwave briefly until warm; set aside.
  2. Combine glutinous rice flour, pandan juice or water, and pinch of salt to form a soft dough.
  3. Pinch off portions, fill with palm sugar, and roll into smooth balls.
  4. Boil in water until the balls float; then cook 1 more minute.
  5. Roll in coconut and serve warm.

Make the balls small so the melted sugar center is less messy for children.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
