Pisang Goreng

20 minutes · 4 servings · vegetarian

A very common Indonesian fried banana snack; many families serve it with tea or coffee.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced lengthwise
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons for pan-frying vegetable oil

Let’s make it

  1. Whisk rice flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and water into a thick batter.
  2. Dip the banana slices into the batter to coat well.
  3. Heat a thin layer of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the bananas for 2 to 3 minutes per side until crisp and golden.
  4. Drain briefly on paper towels and serve warm.

Use smaller banana pieces so they cool quickly for kids.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
