35 minutes · 4 servings · vegetarian

A classic sweet dumpling dessert, served here as a gentle snack or breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Check you have the quantities below.

  • 20 glutinous rice balls (plain or black sesame-filled)
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger, sliced
  • 5 cups water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds

Let’s make it

  1. Bring water and ginger to a boil, then simmer 10 minutes.
  2. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved.
  3. Add tangyuan and cook until they float and are fully cooked, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Ladle into bowls and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  5. Serve warm.

Let the tangyuan cool briefly so the filling is not too hot for children.

Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
