A very popular Korean street-food staple, made in a home-kitchen style.
Ingredients
Check you have the quantities below.
- 1 lb (450 g) Korean rice cakes (tteok), cylinder-shaped
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 3 tbsp gochujang
- 1 tsp gochugaru
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 oz (115 g) fish cakes, sliced (optional)
- 2 scallions, sliced
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
Let’s make it
- Soak the rice cakes in warm water for 10 minutes if they are firm.
- Bring water, gochujang, gochugaru, sugar, soy sauce, and garlic to a simmer in a pan.
- Add rice cakes and fish cakes if using. Simmer 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens and the rice cakes are soft.
- Stir in scallions and sesame seeds. Serve hot.
For a milder version, reduce or omit the gochugaru and serve with extra water on the side.
Cooking time varies with equipment and batch size. Follow school allergy rules for children’s meals; keep perishable lunches cold.
